Is there a magical formula to making money on HubPages?

It seems like every day I see a question posed from a new author that specifically asks how many hubs they need to have to make X number of dollars per month, to live off of, or to gain a certain number of views. I'm going to put it to rest right now: There is no magical formula to get to your goals. THere are also no wrong answers. Are you thoroughly confused yet? Many new hubbers think that they can write a few hubs and make millions of dollars a year. It's not that simple. For the same reason, many new hubbers will post a few articles then simply give up when they realize their dreams of a quick buck were dashed. There are a few success stories about authors that seem to gain astronomical traffic through a few short articles, they are the exception to the norm. There are a few things you can do though to help get you on your way to making money with the hub pages program.

Ever heard of compound interist?

Compound interist is the concept that the longer you wait, the more money you will accrue, making you even more money over time. This is also more commonly called "the snowball effect". In my brief history with hub pages, I have found that the same can be true for hub traffic. My overall impression is that the more quality hubs you have, simply the more traffic you will get. The reason why there are 30 day hub challenges, and even the 100 hubs in 30 days challenge is because it gets you writing and creating more hubs. This means more quality content for the site which is found through search engines. Even if each hub only gets one view a day, eventually you will get a constant stream of traffic.

I like to think of it more in fishing terms. If you can imagine yourself as an author, the captain of a fishing boat, your hubs are effectively your fishing net. Each time you add a hub, your net gets bigger and you're able to catch more fish. The longer you troll around the ocean trying to catch fish, the more successful you will be.

The key though is making quality hubs. You must write articles that are engaging, and make people want to read more. If you are an expert on a particular tops, feel free to cross link your hubs like I have here. It will help with exposure as well as keep people engaged with your writing. You may have just turned someone who was looking for a single answer into a casual reader who would like to learn more.

What else can I do to improve my earnings?

Since hub pages is essentially ad driven, you need to think about it from the web surfer's point of view. What can you do to increase the ads that are displayed on the site? Simple: advertise your hubs, not increase your advertising on your articles. Meaning, the key to revenue isn't adding a ton of amazon or eBay modules into your article, but instead make sure the marketing you are doing is targeted inside your article. For example, if your hub is centered around computer hardware, you may want to put an amazon or eBay hub geared towards something you're writing about. This makes the advertising more relevant and readers more likely to click through.

There are tons of places you can actually advertise your articles. I have a few hubs based around increasing traffic to your hubs, but here are a few ideas to get you going:

  • Post your articles to social media like Twitter and Facebook
  • Use targeting surfing sites like Stumbleupon
  • Join other forums in your area of expertise. For example, if you wrote an article on off road Jeep 4x4's become active on other sites and reference your hubs.
  • Tell for friends!

There are a few other sites you can use to increase back links and gain other exposure, but remember you should be proud of your work so be sure to tell everyone about it! The traffic will come naturally through search engines and referrals. And remember there is no magic formula, and it just takes time.
